Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28.19-20)
These two verses are familiar to Christians throughout the world. It is the “Great Commission.” The final directions from Jesus to his disciples. Too many believers make this overly complicated or treat it superficially simple.
Christ tells us to make disciples. We’ll explore what a disciple is, what a disciple of Christ is, and how you make them. More importantly, how you become one. There are many, many denominations in the Church. Many differences in beliefs and structure. We’ll cut through that, looking back at what believers in the original church did and why. We will look at how as individuals and as the Church can walk the same path.
Towards Discipleship is also a book in development. The goal is to have it published by the end of 2022. Please bear with me as this happens. Articles on the website will often, but not always, be excerpts and chapters from the book. You’ll also find commentary from the early church and contemporary theologians.
So who am I to tackle this project? I’m Father David Barton, ordained in the Apostolic Church of Saint Thomas. I’m not an expert theologian. But, I have read, studied, and experienced enough to have an understanding of what it means to be a disciple.
